Women International (GWI) moves forward on Teachers for Rural Futures Project,
UgandaThe community
engagement stage of the Graduate Women International (GWI) project Teachers for Rural Futures project district has started.
Members from the Uganda Association of University Women (UAUW) went to the
Buyende District, eastern Uganda, to sensitise community leaders, elders,
parents and especially girls on the merits of education, identify potential
girls for the next intake, and build relationships through dialogue and
education. Increasing the number of qualified women teachers in rural Uganda
represents a huge opportunity to increase the quality of secondary education for
all, increase girls¡¯ access to and completion of secondary school and provide
role models for girls.

Graduate Women Queensland Sunshine Coast Branch hosts International Women¡¯s Day
BreakfastAt their
International Women¡¯s Day (IWD) Breakfast on 8 March 2016, GWI member Graduate
Women Queensland Branch, an affiliation of the Australian Federation of Graduate Women (AFGW), invited a
speaker on Restorative Justive (RJ) which views a crime as a violation of people
and relationships, and offers the opportunity for victims to meet or communicate
with their offender to explain the real impact of the crime. In her opening
remarks, President Sylvia Hovey also emphasised the GWI IWD campaign focused on
women teachers as drivers of positive change in education for girls and young
women and the campaign message strands: create access, celebrate achievement,
strengthen teachers¡¯ agency.

GWI is delighted to
see that the agreed conclusions from the 60th Commission on the Status of Women highlight
the importance of ¡®completion of secondary schooling, which is key to the
achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls¡¯, and that
¡®all women and girls must enjoy access to lifelong learning opportunities and
equal access to quality education at all levels – early childhood, primary,
secondary and tertiary education, as well as technical and vocational training¡¯.
